Reading meme [Jun. 29th, 2009|12:11 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | geeky]

01. Do you snack while you read? If so, favourite reading snack?
Definitely. I read on my lunch break at work and pretty much whenever I have free time. I don't have a current favorite snack, whatever I'm hungry for. What's funny is if you look through some of the childhood books that I saved from my mum's purges there are loads of orange fingerprints to be found. Yes, I was a Cheese Doodle fan even then.

02. Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
I definitely mark my books if they're textbooks or one of the review books that I get from Librarything. I tend to give books as presents so I do write inscriptions for people.

03. How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
I tend to use bookmarks. I used to dog-ear a lot but I'm definitely trying to break that habit.

04. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
Anything really, except romance. I'm trying to read more poetry, especially Dante. He was referenced in the book version of Hannibal and the selection was so beautiful that I want to read more. I'm also trying to read more classics. I was tracked in the highly competitive classes form about 3rd grade onwards and everyone was really, well, competitive. I didn't really like anyone and rebelled by reading the trashiest books I could find. I once did a book report on Silence of the Lambs for my 12th grade English class.

05. Hard copy or audiobooks?
I'd like to try audiobooks for when I'm exercising.

06. Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?
I read on lunch break, 15 minute breaks, and during my commute so I've gotten used to stopping whenever I have to.

07. If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?
Absolutely.

08. What are you currently reading?
I'm rereading the Harry Potter series in preparation for the movie coming out, so I'm in the middle of Order of the Phoenix.
Into the Silent Land by Paul Broks. It's about Broks' experiences in neuropsychology.
Death's Door by Sandra M. Gilbert, which is about how people mourn in the 20th and 21st century.
The Quitter by Harvey Pekar. This is an autobiographical comic about him growing up.
Vampire Doll by Erika Kari, which is a manga about a vampire who's banished into a cross. One-hundred-years later, a descendant of the exorcist who banished Guilt-Na-Zan releases him into the body of a doll so he can be his maid.

09. What is the last book you bought?
The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling, one year late. I'm sad that there aren't any more Harry Potter parties.

10. Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can read more than one at a time?
I juggle multiple books, I tend to get bored if I read just one thing.

11. Do you like re-reading books?
I love to, I always pick up things that I missed in the original reading.

My first shuffle meme [Aug. 8th, 2008|07:44 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | amused]
[music |MST3K Hobgoblins!]

1. Put Your iTunes/Windows Media Player/ETC on Shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS.
4. Put any comments in brackets after the song name.
5. Put this on your journal.

1. If someone says, "Is this okay?"?
"Hey Jupiter" Tori Amos
[This song is kind of intense, it's one of my favorite "I'm sad" songs.]
2. How would you describe yourself?
"Ode to L.A." The Raveonettes
[Weird, since L.A. sounds like a place I'd really hate.]
3. What do you like in a girl/guy?
"Albinoni Adagio in G-Minor 'Anytime, Anywhere'" Sarah Brightman
[LoL implied promiscuity.]
4. How do you feel today?
"Family Tree" Belle and Sebastian
[Not too far off the mark, it's a kind of melancholy day.]
5. What is your life's purpose?
"Cataracts" Andrew Bird
[I'm really not sure what this song is about, so I can't really tell if it's my life's purpose. But it does have some sad whistling in the middle, which I like.]
6. What is your motto?
"Mr. E. Leon Rauis" Rasputina
[Funny since it's a song about an old photo and I collect old photos and I'm obsessed with the past.]
7. What do your friends think of you?
"Lady in the Lake" Elysian Fields
[Well, I could be viewed as icy, so...yeah.]
8. What do you think of your parents?
"The Bitch of Living" Spring Awakening soundtrack
[Ha! This song lists all the boys' problems in the show--masturbation, crushes, and the piano teacher with large breasts. And it's funny b/c I love my parents but they are problematic.]
9. What do you think about very often?
"O Valencia!" The Decembrists
[No, I do not often think of torching a town after my girlfriend was killed by a gang.]
10. What is 2 + 2?
"Amazon" M.I.A.
[No.]
11. What do you think of your best friend?
"The Model" Belle and Sebastian
[One of my favorite songs but nothing to do with my bff.]
12. What do you think of the person you like?
"Sex and Dying in High Society" X
[Again, nothing to do with him.]
13. What is your life story?
"From My Own True Love (Lost at Sea)" The Decembrists
[Well, it would be tragic.]
14. What do you want to be when you grow up?
"The Mariner's Revenge" The Decembrists
[A vengeful mariner?]
15. What do you think of when you see the person you like?
"Simple X" Andrew Bird
[He does kind of make me wish for the end of the world. Then we could be alone together.]
16. What will you dance to at your wedding?
"Paper Planes" M.I.A.
[Omg, this would be such the best wedding song. We'll get down at the "some, some, some, some I'll murder, some, some I'll let goooo..." part]
17. What will they play at your funeral?
"Death of the Party" Blur
[I was the death of the party when I was alive so it makes sense.]
18. What is your hobby/interest?
"High on Life (Live)" Rasputina
[I always interpreted this song to be about 19th century hookers, so that's kind of funny.]
19. What is your biggest fear?
"The Island: Come and See/The Landlord's Daughter/You'll Not Feel the Drowning" The Decembrists
[Well, this is a song about rape and murder, so I guess that is a reasonable fear.]
20. What is your biggest secret?
"I'll Never Tell" Original cast recording of Once More with Feeling
[Not so much a secret, just a worry that my beau's love isn't true.]
21. What do you think of your friends?
"Roseblood" Mazzy Star
[This is kind of an introspective song, so, not so much about the friends.]
22. What will you post this as?
"The Dark I Know Well" Spring Awakening soundtrack
[One of my fave songs from the show but not what I titled this post.]
23. What song would you play during your first time having sex?
"Horses" Tori Amos
[Wow, it's like bookends, starting and ending with Tori songs. And as the song mentions riding, I suppose it could be appropriate for sexy-time.]

This is where the fish lives [Jul. 25th, 2008|08:27 pm]
[Tags|]

Lifted from [info]rachelsummers77. Comment on this entry and if you want, I'll choose 7 things from your profile interests that you'll explain--i.e. what it is, why you have it as an interest.
1.Amigurumi "Knitted stuffed toy" in Japanese. Basically, they're little crocheted dolls. I've been trying to make them foreverly, but my crocheting in spirals skills suck. Also, I have to buy smaller and smaller hooks. They're still super-cute and I love to read about people's new patterns and ideas.
2. Bizenghast An awesome manga series by M. Alice, LeGraw that's published by Tokyopop. This is what got me into loligoth (Well, this and Kamikaze Girls.) Basically, Dinah is a troubled young woman living with her aunt in a mansion that was once an asylum. He ronly friend is Vincent. While walking through the cemetary one day, Dinah accidentally signs a contract requiring her to free all the ghosts in the mausoleum. They're helped by the smartass cat-boy Edaniel. The drawing style is gorgeous and the story is intriguing.
3. Cocorosie A musical duo whose music is absolutely insane, kind of like if Joahnna Newsom joined Dresden Dolls. Awesome.
4. Ghosts of Albion This is the title of a series of books cowritten by Amber Benson, aka Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The books are set in Victorian England and follow the exploits of a brother and a sister who, with the aid of some helpful ghosts, are entrusted to protect all of Albion. The books are funny, thrilling, and surprisingly sensual. Also, Amber Benson is made of awesome and I'll read/listen to/watch anything she creates.
5. Hayao Miyazaki It's his fault that I got into anime and manga. Before I saw Spirited Away, I associated anime with the Pokemon kiddies in my town. I love his work because he takes something that's viewed as frivolous, cartoons, and elevates them to high art. It's impossible to look at a frame of Howl's Moving Castle and not see this.
6. Persepolis This is one of my favorite graphic novels. This is another example of something that's supposed to be frivolous, comics, being elevated to high art. Marjane Satrapi, the creator of Persepolis's drawing style reminds me of lino-blocking. The story of her life growing up in Iran and then her years at a boarding school in Austria is simultaneously touching, hilarious, and heartbreaking.
7. Venus zine This is one of my favorite magazines and has somewhat replaced Bust in my heart. It's devoted to following women in the arts. Venus is awesome if you want to hear about artists before they hit it big--I heard about Andrew Bird, Bat for Lashes, The Decembrists, M.I.A., The Pierces, and She and Him from Venus. I'm not proud of many things but I do say that I have bitchin' taste in music.

So I've finally joined the 21st century and bought one of those portable music devices wherein music is stored electronically so that you may reaccess it at a later time and place. An iPod. It's like a portable victrola!

So this is my very first ever shuffle. It's very Rasputina and Decembrists heavy because I've uploaded multiple cd's by them.
1. Draconian Crackdown by Rasputina
2. Whispering from the Spring Awakening soundtrack
3. O Valencia by The Decembrists
4. Remnants of Percy Bass by Rasputina
5. Albinoni Adagio in G Minor "Anytime, Anywhere" by Sarah Brightman
6. We Stay Behind by Rasputina
7. The Perfect Crime by The Decembrists
8. Gingerbread Coffin by Rasputina
9. Black Hole by She & Him
10. Rose K (Live) by Rasputina

Lately, I just haven't been able to muster the interest to sit down and watch a movie. There are soooo many that I haven't seen that it amazes my roommate. I just grew up really isolated from pop culture. We didn't have cable for a long time and I wasn't allowed to watch MTV or VH1 when we did until I was 13 or 14, so I had no idea what was cool or new. I spent most of my time reading. So my roommate is constantly amazed when I confess that I've never seen any of the Indiana Jones movies, or the fact that I never saw The Breakfast Club until college or Sixteen Candles until I graduated college (Now I understand why Peter Griffin said "automobiiiiiiile" like that, and the thing from Fmaily Guy where Jake Ryan rapes Peter.) Yet I've seen the worst movies on Earth, like half of Troma's catalogue, 976-Evil, and I'm currently watching MST3K's version of Werewolf on Youtube.
Because I'm awesome.
Ooh, since I'm visiting my parents and they have cable interwebs, I should watch Dawn Saves the Trees! Zack Braff!

Fake sex0rs [Mar. 12th, 2008|07:08 pm]
[Tags|]

List ten fictional characters you would have sex with (in no particular order) and tag 5 people to do the same.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
1. Spike: He's killed two Slayers. TWO! So he's ambitious and dangerous, which are some of my favorite characteristics in a man/vampire. Plus there's the whole hot English punk thing.
2. Giles: Remember season 4 when the Scoobies catch Giles singing at an open-mic night and Willow's all, "I remember why I had a crush on him in high school?" Yeah. There's something very hot about Giles, whether it's the tweed jackets with leather elbow patches or his knowledge of the dark arts. Remember when he busted into The Magic Box all powerful when Willow was naughty? Me-ow. I just like my men older and English, what can I say.
3. Tara: To throw in a wildcard, there's Tara who's pretty different from Giles and Spike. There was just something so enchanting about her.
Harry Potter
4. Remus Lupin: A werewolf in a jumper just trying to be a teacher? Sign me up. There was something especially sexy about the scene in book 7 when he freaked out.
5. Sirius Black: A convict with an enchanted motorbike. How could I say "no" to him?
6. Snape: Can you see a pattern here? I guess I just like people as miserable as me.
Jane Eyre
7. Mr. Rochester: Things that Mr. Rochester has that Mr. Darcy doesn't; a secret wife kept in the attic and a desire to marry his bastard child's governess. Everyone loves a (somewhat) reformed hedonist, especially a dark and tempestuous one.
Spring Awakening
8. Moritz: A tragic, troubled, sexually-confused teenager who can sing. Yes, please. Plus, he sings one of my favorite songs from the show, "I Don't Do Sadness."
The Office
9. Jim: Probably the one normal guy on my list. I love funny guys, especially ones who see the humor in putting office supplies in Jello.
His Dark Materials
10. Uncle Azrael: I said that I like ambitious men, and what is more ambitious than killing god? I was horrified when he separated Roger from his daemon, but he made up for it with his ballsy move to attack heaven.

10 Things Meme [Feb. 10th, 2008|02:52 pm]
[Tags|]

List 10 things that made you happy recently, and then tag 10 people.
1. My new Niji Waterbrush. Basically, it's a paintbrush with a hollow barrel that you can fill with water (Or ink or paint, if you want) that is an alternative to using a can of water when using watercolors. I always have trouble controlling watercolors, and I've found that this gives me more control. Plus, I use it to lightly go over what I draw with my Tombo markers.
2. Well, I've kept this quiet on my LJ but since it's the second trimester, my stepsister is pregnant! I'm looking forward to being a wild aunt and spoiling my niece.
3. Two days off! W00t!
4. My renewed interest in Kingdom Hearts.
5. The fact that I'm about 60 pages to being done reading Gun, Germs and Steel.
6. The delicious, frozen Amy's mac n' cheese that I have waiting for me in the freezer for lunch.
7. The "My Sister, My Sitter" episode of The Simpsons. That's the episode when Lisa gets into babysitting and babysits Bart, much to his dismay.
8. The fact that I've decided that if I make it past my 3 month probation period at work, I'm going to get myself an mp3 player *finally*. I've decided on some kind of iPod because all my friends who have them say they're user friendly and I'm pretty technologically illiterate.
9. The new cd I got, We Are The Pipettes by The Pipettes. They sound like a 60's girl-group with hilarious lyrics like "Sorry, but you were just a one-night stand."
10. The new blogs I've recently gotten into. Pharyngula, a science blog with a focus on politics and evolution. And Twistending, a Goosebumps blog.

Run from the meme! [Nov. 14th, 2007|10:39 pm]
[Tags|]

[info]cpennylane chose seven things from my user interests, and I explain them. Comment if you want to join the memey fun.

*bizenghast: One of my favorite mangas ever, by M. Alice LeGraw. This, combined with Kamikaze Girls (The manga and movie, I haven't read the book yet) and Shojo Beat really sparked my love for gothic lolita.
The story is basically a troubled young woman, Dinah, and her friend Vincent, on a quest to appease all the ghosts in a haunted mausoleum.
Her clothing is so beautifully rendered, I swear I would dress like that every day if I had the time/patience/money. That doesn't stop me from browsing the Baby, the Stars Shine Bright website every week!
Here's the cover of a volume of Bizenghast, sorry for the ginormitude of the picture, I just love the image of Dinah's torso as a cello.

*carl sagan: I was introduced to Carl Sagan in my "Biological and sociological history of race" course. We read the introduction to The Demon-Haunted World at the beginning of the course and a good portion of our time was devoted to distinguishing science from pseudoscience. Reading The Demon-Haunted World led me to Skeptic Magazine, God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens (I know his name is mud in a lot of feminist circles, and I disagree with him about Iraq, but I think he's spot on about religion), The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, and my eventual atheism. Carl was a kind, gentle spirit, that introduced astrophysics to the masses, and he died far too young. I think he would be horrified by the legitimacy that pseudosciences like intelligent design have attained today.
*dreams: I've recorded my dreams since I was 13 or 14. I find my dreams to be hilarious and comforting. Unless they're one of the many nightmares I have--running from my dad, being killed by my dad, and losing my teeth.
*gary oldman: The only reason to watch Bram Stoker's Dracula. I especially love the scene when him and Mina are drinking absinthe. How could she choose stupid Keanu Reeves over him? He travelled through oceans of time to see her!!! Gary Oldman seems like he's the artist on the edge, just a little bit dangerous. I remember watching an interview wit him and laughing, saying he chose to be in the Harry Potter series so he could be in movies that his kids could actually see. I still love him, despite the horrible movies he's been in (LOst in Space, anyone?).
*poppy z brite: I really got into Poppy Z. Brite in high school, when I was a Very Angry and Pretentious Goth. This was when she was still writing things like Lost Souls, Drawing Blood, and Exquisite Corpse. I'll admit, I read EC solely for the gore and totally missed the subtext about AIDS. What can I say, I was 16 and just happy that someone else on earth seemed to be as morbid as I was/am. I'll also admit, I was kind of pissed that she stopped writing horror and stopped reading her for awhile. Thankfully, I've matured A LOT, and I've requested Prime & Liquor.
Also, Poppy, along with *cough*Anne Rice*cough* helped cultivate my love of New Orleans. I've been there twice, pre-Katrina, and would really like to return again. I know my money will help the local economy. Who knows, maybe I can realize my dream of living there one day.
Poppy blogs on LJ under the name [info]docbrite. She's had a really rough couple of years--she lost several of her pets in Katrina and feels really guilty for leaving them, she also lost her house in Katrina and just got a new house, and has been dealing with chronic pain. I hope she gets back to writing because she's a truly talented writer and I hope that her life gets better soon.
*the golden girls: I blame The Golden Girls for making me a feminist. My mum let me watch it when I was little in the 80s, and it just really influenced me. These older women, living together and relatively independent from men. Also, Bea Arthur rocks.
*sushi: I love sushi! Not just the way it tastes, I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I have sushi erasers, stickers (including Hello Kitty as a sushi chef), and knitting patterns. I also ordered gummy sushi candy from Japan. For my birthday, my mum got me this chocolate sushi and rice crisp candy. There were sushi rolls with white chocolate and chilli that were supposed to be spicy tuna rolls, and cucumber and mint rolls that were supposed to be cucumber rolls. If I ever have money, I dream of eating at Masa or Sugiyama.

First-Line Meme [Jan. 4th, 2007|09:40 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[music |MST3K "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders"]

Lifted from [info]docbrite. The first line of everything you've written, completed or not, in 2006. I'm not counting these blog entries, or else this would take up a hundred pages, nor am I counting my real journal entries. But I am counting stuff from my moxiehart blog, which I'm kind of abandoning--it's just too similar to feministing. I need a scanner& digital cam, then I could do a cool webzine or print zine. >.< Can you get deductions for art supplies?
Anyway, lines. Once more, with feeling!
*"Violet, who was reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for the first time, was interrupted by a musical sound from her computer." "Violet Loves Voldie"
*"'Well, it’s…castle-y,' said the young blonde woman, pushing her sunglasses onto her head." "A Long Way From Sunnyale"
*"Summer 1964 'Mum, are we poor?' asked a little boy walking down the street, holding his mother’s hand." "Selected Scenes from the Life of Severus Snape"
*"'Good morning,' said the crisp female voice." Opening line to my as of yet untitled, massively reworked, zombie story.
Writings from Femlibbers Unite!
-The lines are followed by the title.
*"I already have another blog so why start one here?" "Why?"
*"Dear Bust,
You don't know me but I've been reading your zine for 7 or 8 years now." "An Open Letter to Bust"
*"A man has been arrested in the dragging death of an unidentified woman." "This is Sick"
*"Not really feminist, but this is still interesting." "For Everyone Who Still Believes in Evolution..."
*"According to the New York Times, more and more all-women's colleges are closing." "Does This Mean the Girl-On-Girl Girl's School Fantasies Will End Too?"
*"I just saw the DVD cover of the movie Phat Girlz (Thankfully, I've never seen the movie) while perusing my local Target and was pretty shocked at how heavily airbrushed the cover picture of Mo'nique was." "Phat Girlz?"
*"I picked this story up from Americablog: An American Airlines flight was almost diverted." "al Gayda."
*"This website is really old and it says it hasn't been updated in 4 years, but I don't care because I love it!" "Me Love You Long Time"
*"From the BBC, Milan enacts a code to protect young models from exploitation, despite completely missing the point that although the models are participating willingly, they are still exploited." "Code of the Catwalk Doesn't Protect from the Male Gaze"
*"From the New York Times: A report from the ACLU and Human Rights Watch accuses two girls' juvenile detentions facilities in New York State of abusing its prisoners." "Prison Industrial Complex Bad for Teenage Girls"
*"Safia Amajan, the head of women's affairs in Afghanistan was killed." "I Thought We Were Going to Free all the Women?"
*"I got a response from American Airlines to the letter that I wrote to them regarding al Gayda." "The Not-So-Friendly Skies"
*"A survey by AG Properties has found that 80 percent of moms think there are too many over-sexualized dolls available for young girls." "Less Popular Dolls Jealous of Other Dolls, Calls Bratz 'Totally Skanky'"
*"I found this *ahem* interesting ad at Feministing:" "Beer Better Than Feminism?"

*"Playboy has opened a new club in Las Vegas." "Bad News For Women Who Don't Like to be Objectified"
*"Elizabeth Blackburn has discovered telomerase, a protein that determines the life span of cells." "Woman Able to be Both a Woman and a Scientist"
*"Or, more accurately, stupid wankers who can't deal with not-anorexic women stirring up trouble." "Large Lusty Ladies Stirring Up Trouble"
*"Yesterday I had a rather hostile experience while riding the PATH train to NYC." "Not An Article Today"
*"Lily Burana bares it all (I promise, that will be my only "bare" pun) in Strip City: A Stripper's Farewell Journey Across America." "Book Review--Strip City"
*"Picked this up at Feministing;" "It's True, You Can't Rape a .38"

[music |Home Alone]

The year is coming to an end...so reply with one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember, it doesn't matter when it was.

Next, re-post this and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty cool (and fun) to see the responses. Re-post as "memories of us."
